Moving Day

How to Prepare for a Removal Company

Prepare for moving day by organising access, parking, labels, dismantling, appliances, valuables and a clear inventory for the removal team.

Confirm the scope

Review the inventory and tell the company about additions before moving day. Loft contents, garden furniture, sheds and storage units are often missed.

Confirm which items require dismantling and whether packing is included.

  • Update the box count
  • Mention unusually heavy items
  • Confirm both addresses
  • Share access instructions

Prepare the property

Clear hallways and stairs, remove trip hazards and keep children and pets away from loading areas. Protect or point out any particularly delicate floors or walls.

Disconnect and prepare appliances according to the manufacturer’s instructions unless another service has been agreed.

  • Defrost freezers
  • Drain washing machines
  • Secure appliance doors
  • Remove fuel from equipment

Organise labels and essentials

Label boxes by destination room. Use a separate colour or note for items that need immediate access.

Keep keys, medication, documents, valuables and personal essentials with you rather than in the removal vehicle.

  • Create an essentials box
  • Keep chargers accessible
  • Separate items not being moved
  • Photograph meter readings

Meet the crew

Walk through the property with the team leader. Identify fragile items, parking restrictions and the order in which key belongings should be loaded.

Keep a reachable contact number throughout the move and tell the team about any change to key collection or access.

Make access safe and efficient

Clear hallways, stairs and doorways before the team arrives. Remove trip hazards, secure pets and protect any area that the customer is responsible for covering. Tell the movers about weak steps, low ceilings or awkward turns.

Arrange parking and make sure keys, lift fobs and building contacts are available. Time is easily lost when the vehicle cannot get close or a service lift has not been released.

  • Clear a route through every room
  • Reserve parking or loading access
  • Keep children and pets away from loading
  • Have keys and access codes ready

Walk through the move with the team

At the start, identify items not being moved, fragile belongings, dismantling requirements and boxes that must remain upright. Point out lofts, sheds, garages and outdoor items so they are not overlooked.

At delivery, explain room labels and any priority furniture placement. Check the vehicle and property before the team leaves, and raise immediate concerns promptly.

  • Separate items travelling with you
  • Identify high-value or delicate pieces
  • Confirm the destination room labels
  • Complete a final property check

Final confirmation before moving day

Send any revised inventory, access or timing information before the team is dispatched. Confirm who will be present at each address and how the company can contact you if traffic, keys or building access changes.

  • Confirm arrival time
  • Provide destination contact details
  • Share parking changes
  • Keep payment arrangements ready
